Divine Liturgy

St Paul Antiochian Orthodox Church - Divine Liturgy - OAJ Graphic

Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
– Matthew 26:26-28

The Divine Liturgy is the way we know God and the way God becomes known to us.
– St Sophrony of Essex

The Divine Liturgy is at the centre of all liturgical worship within the Orthodox Church. The word ‘liturgy’ means “the work of the people” and requires active participation from the faithful. The Divine Liturgy was instituted by Christ Himself at the Lord’s Supper with His Disciples in the “upper room” (Mark 14:15; Luke 22:12). Baptised, initiated members of Christ’s body are called to prepare themselves with confession, prayer and fasting for the mystical supper; to partake of the body and blood of Christ and become one with God (John 17:21).

On the road to Emmaus with the two disciples, Christ opened the Scriptures and “took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them” (Luke 24:30). This, in conjunction with the Lord’s Supper, His Resurrection on the third day, and countless other references throughout the Scriptures, is the most intimate and mysterious encounter with the Lord by living these events through the Divine Liturgy.

Of the divine services, the Divine Liturgy functions ‘outside of time’ and is the living experience of heaven on earth, the new drink of the “Father’s Kingdom” (Matt 26:29). It is always celebrated on Sunday, the Lord’s Day (Rev 1:10), but is also celebrated all throughout the year for various feasts as a living remembrance of the Risen Christ and our life in Him.

For millennia, we have continued this unbroken command from Christ to serve the Divine Liturgy “in remembrance” of Him (Luke 22:19). If you would like to “come and see” (John 1:46), please refer to our Service Schedule or Events Calendar.
