Friday Youth Night: A Night of Faith and Fellowship
On the evening of Friday, 7th February, the over-16s youth hosted a talk on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, offering an enriching experience for all attendees. Hosted by Khouria Rita and Abouna Jean, the night provided a deep and thought-provoking discussion on gender roles through the lens of Orthodox Christian teachings. Whilst the over-16s dived into their talk, the under-16s had the pleasure of being accompanied by Fr. Leonidas to discuss iconography, its roots and its significance in the faith.
The event commenced with a communal dinner, enjoyed by everyone present. Fr. Leonidas Ioannou, our guest speaker for the evening, offered a blessing over the food.
The under-16s were treated to a fascinating exploration of Orthodox iconography, led by a Fr. Leonidas. The session began with an introduction to the historical roots of iconography, tracing its inspiration back to ancient Egypt, particularly evident in the almond-shaped eyes characteristic of icons.
Fr. Leonidas explained that mastering iconography is a lifelong journey, requiring decades of dedication and practice. He guided the group through the step-by-step process of creating an icon, demonstrating how to sketch the features of figures and prepare the paints. These paints, made by blending egg yolk, vinegar, and colored powders, produce the vibrant hues traditionally used in iconography.
Following dinner, the over-16s were divided into two groups. The males, led by Abouna Jean, proceeded into the Church, while the females, guided by Khouria Rita, remained in the reception hall. This division allowed for open and engaging conversations tailored to each group's perspectives and spiritual journey.
Throughout the session, key topics were explored, including the essence of masculinity and femininity, the distinctive roles of men and women within the faith, and the responsibilities each gender holds. One of the central themes discussed was how Christ and the Theotokos serve as the perfect image of masculinity, embodying strength, humility, and sacrificial love.
The evening proved to be an inspiring and enlightening experience for all who attended. Participants expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to deepen their understanding of their faith and roles within the Church. The event successfully fostered a sense of unity and encouragement among both men and women, reinforcing the beauty of God’s design for His creation.
The night was a testament to the importance of faith-centred conversations in shaping the lives of believers and fostering a deeper connection with Christ.
